For years, I faced the fall season with a mix of excitement and dread. Cooler weather, football season, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—each event felt like a never-ending party. You go from candy season to candy season. But by January 1st, I was always battling some severe chronic fatigue, sprinkle in my gut issues, brain fog, throw in a really bad attitude, and a blown holiday budget and WOW was I a joy to be around. 😳 It was a cycle I repeated year after year until one day, I had enough of hearing myself complain. I can either stop complaining and do something or expect to have zero people willing to be around me for the months of Jan and Feb.
Enter the “vision board”. I was skeptical. Sounded like some voodoo hippy kinda thing to me but at the time of my 1st vision board, I had ZERO desire to set goals. I was in a funk. My vision boards haven’t always been some Martha Stewart beautifully put together designs. No most of them looked like a kindergarten project gone terribly wrong. But one thing remained consistent: every time I set my focus on what I truly wanted for my life, that vision board brought clarity and direction.
My Journey to Clarity
Eight years ago, after my divorce, I was in the stress response-you know fight, flight, freeze or fawn. I was entirely focused on my kids and what others thought of me (fawn response). I carried so much shame, feeling like I had failed. Learning to sit with that discomfort while still picturing a more peaceful future took a lot of tools. But one of the simplest—and most underutilized—tools I found was the vision board.
WHY do we always resist most what will help us the most?? Its mainly our nevous system. Especially with midlife women…we have an abundance of stressors and little of those hormones that help us combat stress (estrogen and progesterone) Thats why doing small steps like creating a vision board helps to set SMALL Attainable steps. For many me, doing new things can makes me freaking uncomfortable. Things feel unfamiliar. I feel silly. But at that point in my life, I thought, what did I have to lose? It certainly wouldn’t hurt to try. And year after year, I’m amazed at how the things I focus on in my vision board start to grow and manifest.
THATS why I want to bring it to YOU!
The Science Behind Vision Boards
You know when you get a new car, and suddenly you see that same car everywhere?!? This is known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, or the frequency illusion. It’s a cognitive bias that makes you notice something more often after you’ve become aware of it. 🤓 A vision board works in a similar way—by focusing your mind, it helps you start seeing opportunities to get what you truly want.
So, is creating a vision board just a silly time-waster? Not at all. Science tells us that vision boards are powerful tools for reducing stress and anxiety, particularly when life feels chaotic.
Why You Should Create a Vision Board
🌟Clarifies Your Goals: Your priorities. In the whirlwind of daily life, a vision board helps you zero in on what’s really important. This clarity can reduce decision fatigue and help you spend your time and energy more wisely.
🌟Engages Your Brain: A vision board activates your brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS), which filters out the noise and highlights opportunities that align with your goals. It’s like training your brain to work smarter, not harder.
🌟Promotes Mindfulness: Creating a vision board is an act of self-care that forces you to slow down, reflect, and be present. It’s a small, intentional step that can make a big difference in how you feel day-to-day.
🌟Provides Stress Relief: When life gets overwhelming, your vision board becomes a tangible reminder of what really matters. It helps you stay grounded, reducing stress and anxiety by keeping you focused on the big picture.
🌟Boosts Motivation: Seeing your goals displayed visually is incredibly motivating. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and direction, which can turn those overwhelming feelings into a sense of purpose.
