Deciding to hire a health coach is an empowering decision, but it’s also a difficult decision to make if you don’t know exactly what to expect!
Will they actually help you reach your health goals?
Will it be just like every other program you’ve tried, and inevitably failed at?
Will you just revert back to the same old habits once you’re done working with the coach?
These are all valid questions to have! especially when you’re trusting this person to help you address some of the habits, feelings, and struggles that you’re the most sensitive about.
That’s why I’ve decided that I’m going to tell you the TRUTH about hiring a health coach. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
I’ve been a health coach for over 6 years now, and I’ve learned a lot about the different processes that each client goes through on their journey towards self-discovery.
Of course everyone is different in their own, incredible ways. But there are certain things that are true for every single client. I’m sharing them now so you can finally know with CONFIDENCE if hiring a health coach is the right decision for you.
So without further ado… Here are 5 truths about hiring a health coach.
Asking for help will feel wrong, and foreign to you
You probably aren’t used to asking for help with your problems. Many of my clients are midlife moms and empty nesters who have gotten into the habit of never asking for help from anyone.
They’ve told themselves that THEY are the ones who need to help others. They are caretakers and energy givers, always thinking about the needs of others, and never their own.
So when it comes time to ask for help, it just doesn’t feel right!
Not only because they aren’t used to it, but also because they feel like they should be able to figure everything out on your own. Or with a self-help book. Or with enough research.
But no amount of self-help books or research will be able to give you personalized support with your specific problems and goals like a health coach can.
You likely already have more than enough information to help you reach your goals, that isn’t the problem. The problem is with actually IMPLEMENTING this information in a way that is meaningful, impactful, and effective for you.
You deserve to get help. The more you take care of yourself, the better you will be able to show up for those around you. So push past the discomfort of asking for help, and recognize that it will all be so worth it in the end.
You will have to put in the work to see the results
A health coach will give you all of the education, tools, support, accountability, and answers that you need to be able to feel confident in making healthy choices and living a life you can be proud of.
They will figure out exactly what resources you need to reach your goals. They will talk through your barriers with you, and help you discover your true goals when it comes to your health.
However, it will be up to you to put in the actual work. To take the tools and information you have been given. To open up and be honest about what you need. To dive deep into where your current thoughts an behaviors are coming from.
This is when you will finally see true progress.
A health coach cannot do that work for you, but they can open up the path for you, and be the support you need along the journey.
You will have to look deeper than just diet and exercise
Most generalized health programs will only have you focus on your diet and exercise. But true health coaching is about so much more than that.
When you only focus on diet and exercise, you’re missing entire pieces of the puzzle, and your health will likely NEVER fall into place because you’re searching in all the wrong places.
Same goes for only thinking about your weight when it comes to health. Your weight is just one indicator of overall health – And most of the time, it doesn’t matter nearly as much as you think it does.
True health is about your mindset, your hormones, your beliefs, your values, your lifestyle, the people you surround yourself with, and so much more.
Once you focus on the bigger picture, everything starts to fall into place. You naturally reach a healthy weight, you feel better, more energized, happier, and more confident in your decisions. You can accept yourself for who you are, and understand the drives behind your own thoughts and behaviors.
Health coaching will look at EVERY aspect of your life to help you address any roadblocks that could be shielding you from real health and happiness.
Change won’t happen overnight
Health coaching is not another “quick fix” program.
You simply will not see drastic changes over night. And any program that promises you this is a scam.
Real change requires long-term effort. It requires reflection, planning, practice, mistakes, and learning along the way.
Your progress will not be linear, there will be some days that are harder than others. This is how you know that you’re making real, sustainable progress.
Health coaching will actually lead to long-term results and lifelong habit changes. It isn’t the same as trying out a new diet, or getting a gym membership, or commiting to a juice cleanse.
If you keep trying new things, and always resorting back to the same old habits, health coaching is the answer you’ve been looking for.
Your life will never be the same after health coaching
Once you have completed your coaching program, your life will never be the same!
You will see the world differently, and you will see YOURSELF differently. Coaching is work but its also FUN, exciting and you learn to speak to yourself a whole lot nicer.
You will no longer feel like a victim to your life and your habits. You will finally feel confident in yourself, and confident in your abilities to make healthy choices.
You will understand why you have never been able to stay healthy, or stick to a diet, or feel truly great before, and you will be able to change these things on your own.
You will have the tools to take control of your life again.
You will trust yourself, and trust that you can now keep any promises that you make to yourself.
It might sound too good to be true, but that is the truth about the power of health coaching.
